The Language Arts Programs at THE LEARNING PLACE address reading, writing, vocabulary and spelling skills. They are founded on the idea that comprehension of material is the key to success. The ability to understand the basic and more sophisticated skills of language is essential to mastering all aspects of communication.

We believe in a comprehensive phonics program for our beginning readers that is best supported by direct interaction between our students and teachers. In a relaxed setting, and with positive reinforcement from a certified teacher, our students become competent and confident readers.

A diagnostic test is used to help pinpoint the student’s needs. The Reading Comprehension Program focuses on increasing the student's ability to read material with true understanding. The student develops skills needed to identify main ideas, recognize significant details and draw conclusions.

Our Writing Program is designed to help students learn the mechanics of writing. This includes organizational skills, grammar and the ability to respond clearly to questions. We strongly believe in the concept that writing is a LIFE SKILL that will benefit all of our students.

The promotion of the understanding and use of vocabulary is vitally important. It is our belief that the expansion and mastery of vocabulary skills will serve each of our students well in both their ability to communicate effectively and in their future educational experiences.

Spelling skills are addressed using applicable rules and memorization techniques.

Our Math Programs combine the results of our diagnostic testing with the new challenges our students face in their math classes. We address both previously missed skills and newly introduced material. We are keenly aware that success in math is dependent upon the sequential understanding of concepts and computation. The need for remediation, as well as the need to stay up to date in class, go hand in hand in order to assure the desired success for our students. We also offer math programs that target specific areas such as BASIC MATH, ALGEBRA and GEOMETRY.

This program focuses on homework to reinforce organizational skills and provide content support. It includes time management, tracking techniques and ongoing discussions with the students regarding the need to set priorities. By using school assignments (both long and short term), we are able to translate concepts into real and practical skills which enable our students to feel more in control of their day-to-day existence. At THE LEARNING PLACE we consider this one of our most valued goals.

PSAT and SAT Preparation is geared to the pace at which a student can most benefit. Our math, verbal and writing preparation programs are individualized. Due to our low student/teacher ratio each student is able to follow his/her own program. Familiarity with the format of the PSAT and the SAT is a proven way to achieve the best results. We present all materials in the format of the actual testing and provide many opportunities for students to practice with previously administered exams. We strive to create an atmosphere at THE LEARNING PLACE that reduces the anxieties associated with these tests.

The college advising process includes creating a list of appropriate schools and completing applications and necessary essays. Our motto remains, "The less angst the better."
